Rhythm Activities
Many rhythm activities ensure a focus on understanding rhythm and meter in both listening and performance.
Student are asked to:
1) Learn the rhythm patterns from a solo before playing or reading it.
2) Read rhythm patterns from the RHYTHM AND TONAL PATTERN BOOK for
others to echo. All reading is from notation without syllables. As students
progress, they read this notation using rhythm syllables.
3) Use flowing body movement when chanting rhythm patterns. Avoid pulsating
movements such as clapping or marching.
Older student delivers Duple Meter MB/mb patterns from the Music Moves for Piano Pattern CD Book. Younger students move and echo patterns. Game playing fun. The reader is 9 YO and the boys echoing the patterns are 5 and 7.
Triple meter reading, moving, and chanting with two students, ages 10 and 8.
An 11 YO student reads duple division/elongation patterns for other students to echo. Neutral syllables precede chanting using rhythm solfege. Reading is always from notation that has no syllables.
Chanting division/elongation patterns from a new solo builds confidence and rhythmic accuracy. This is a first try. Musical feeling grows when the rhythm patterns become more familiar. Students internalize rhythm patterns before trying to play a piece.
After a rhythm pattern becomes familiar, body movement is incorporated while chanting. When the rhythm patterns are solid, a piece is ready to start to learn to play.
A 7th grader reads patterns for a 9 YO to echo. The the younger student copies the patterns in his Reading and Writing Book. He rewrites the patterns enrhythmically and chants the patterns.
Hold for two MB, swing on 3rd MB, throw on 4th MB. May roll or throw.
